Prevalence of anxiety disorders among children aged 3 to 5 years in Bojnurd city of Iran

Abstract

Introduction: Children as one of the vulnerable age groups are exposed to a variety of psychological disorders. Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental disorders in childhood. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of anxiety disorders among 3 to 5 years old children in Bojnurd city.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on total of 387 children aged 3 to 5 years old in Bojnurd city, Iran. The sampling method in this study was multi-stage sampling. Spence Preschool Anxiety Scale questionnaire (parent version) was used to measure anxiety disorders. Data analyzed by independent t-test and one-way ANOVA test in the SPSS software version 22.
Results: Of 387 children aged 3-5 years, 172 (44.4%) were boy. The mean age of the subjects was 3.97 ± 0.72. The prevalence of anxiety disorders was 51.9% and total mean score of anxiety among participants was 33.28 ± 15.85. Our results showed that agoraphobia disorder (85.5%) and obsessive-compulsive (81%) are the most prevalent disorders and generalized and separation anxiety (35.4%) are the least common anxiety disorder among children aged 3 to 5 years in Bojnurd city.
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate a high prevalence of anxiety disorders in 3 to 5 years old children in Bojnurd city. Therefore, the prevalence of anxiety disorders in 3 to 5 years old children should be at least one of the priorities in the health system of the country.
